that one time we lived in a screensaver: moorea, french polynesia

{Author: Sam Gerard}

Moorea is nothing short of a dream. The entire time I felt like I was living in a screen saver and I simply couldn’t believe what was I was seeing was real life. It’s the most beautiful place in the world and I’ve never felt more lucky to be somewhere in my entire life.

That being said, I’d 100% suggest this dreamworld to anyone that has the opportunity to go. It’s far and can get pricey, but it’s beyond worth it. The entire French Polynesia would make for a great honeymoon – but we did it as a family trip!

Where we stayed: We stayed at the Hilton in an over-the-water hut, which was just as amazing at it looks and sounds. The Hilton also has options to stay in huts on land just off the shore, which are more affordable, but still really nice! The over-the-water hut was simply a dream – waking up knowing the clear blue water is right under you and being able to just go onto your deck and jump in was pure bliss.

What we did: We booked a few excursions through the Hilton, which turned out to be so much fun. Other than that, we spent a lot of time just relaxing on the beach or on the decks of our huts .

  • Excursion #1, Swimming with sharks and sting rays: We boarded a small boat right from the resort and took the most beautiful ride to a spot where sharks and sting rays hang out. I thought I’d be so scared and honestly didn’t think I’d swim with them, but when we got there, I jumped right in. Our guide showed us how calm they are and I was confident they wouldn’t hurt me. My mom was very hesitant and didn’t get in for the first hour or so, but after watching us, she got up the courage to get in the water. Hands down coolest experience of my life. To top it all off, we were taken to a deserted island off Moorea for lunch afterwards – I wish I could relive that day every single day of my life.

  • Excursion #2, ATV Tour: This was so much fun. We ATV’ed through the valley through water, on cool trails, and through pineapple fields. We ended up at an agricultural center and school, where we taste tested their jam and fresh juice. It was a beautiful way to see a different side of Moorea – even without the crystal clean water views, it’s pretty damn beautiful.

  • SUP, snorkeling, kayaking, and jet skiing (all available at the resort): The Hilton has great amenities including fun water sports available right on the beach. We’d kayak and SUP when we woke up and snorkle all day. The snorkeling was unreal – the water was perfectly warm and there were so many colorful and amazing fish.

All in all, this turned out to be my most favorite trip ever. It still is. Everything about it was perfect and I couldn’t imagine a place more beautiful. I dream about it often and can’t wait to go back one day!
